Castlethorn led a consortium of developers in delivering a comprehensive suite of infrastructural works to establish a new community at Adamstown – the first major SDZ to be activated in Ireland.
Adamstown was the first large-scale Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) to be mobilised in Ireland. As such, a full scope of infrastructural works was needed to establish this new town from scratch, and Castlethorn played a pivotal role in the development.
The project involved extensive stakeholder engagement with local community groups, utility providers and government departments. The level of planning and engagement required for this scheme set a new bar for the industry, and it has become the benchmark for other projects of this scale.
To make the SDZ viable, Castlethorn delivered major road and utility infrastructure, along with a foul water pumping station and essential drainage to support up to 20,000 homes. Physical infrastructure and utility connections were installed to service Adamstown train station and three school sites.
Castlethorn also developed a 1km-long link road, a community centre, a creche and a range of outdoor recreational and sports facilities, all of which were transferred to the local authority for the benefit of the community.
In addition to the infrastructural works, Castlethorn constructed a range of retail spaces and over 1,500 residential units across the development – including the SEAI House of Tomorrow and some of the first energy efficient, A-rated homes in Ireland.
